Be More Dog

One to One Home Based Canine Behaviour Training

If you are experiencing any unwanted behaviours from your dog, then I can help. We all want our dogs to be happy, and secure, and it can be distressing to witness times when this is not the case. I will work closely with you, and give you the knowledge and confidence to rehabilitate your dog to a balanced state. The key to success is seeing the world from your dog’s point of view. And once you change your behaviour, your dog will follow. Common behaviours are listed below, but there are many more, so no matter how frustrating, strange or quirky your dog’s problem, I will endeavour to fix them all!

Poor Recall.
Pulling on the Lead.
Possessiveness.
Resource guarding.
Obsessions.

Separation Anxiety.
Fear.
Aggression.
Jumping up.

Excessive Barking.
Coprophagia (poo eating).
Destructiveness.
Hyperactivity.
Inappropriate Toileting.

My Philosophy

In today’s world, the dog has superseded being our best friend. He is our baby; our spouse; a reliable shoulder to cry on . We dress dogs up in clothes, allow them to watch tv with us on the sofa, and sleep with them in our beds, and whilst giving them everything we think they could possibly need , we are giving them primarily what we humans need. We have forgotten that they are animals. We have unwittingly created the behaviours we don’t want, by humanizing them. You would be surprised by how many problems are created by loving your dog too much, or at the wrong time. Love alone without exercise (mental and physical) and discipline is not healthy for a dog.

We humans worry about the future and get affected by the past, but luckily because dogs live in the moment, they have a greater ability to change than us, for good.

Dog psychology is very different to human psychology, and by coming at a problem from the dog’s point of view, it is a simple way to correct it. So I urge you to ‘be more dog’.

About Me

I was trained using the methods of Cesar Millan, ’The Dog Whisperer’ of the United States. My teacher trained directly under Cesar, who gave him the name ‘The UK Dog Whisperer’.

Caesar’s method of training uses both positive and negative reinforcement. (NB Negative reinforcement does not mean punishment). It reflects the way a dog would teach another dog, and focuses on the energy of the handler to produce the best results.

Basically, we are communicating with the dog in a language they understand.

Over the years, I have seen a multitude of different breeds of dogs, with many different behavioural problems. No case is the same.

I live in London, so most of my cases are locally based. I have also worked at the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Oxfordshire,  Acre’s Way rehoming centre in Essex, Many Tears Animal Rescue in Wales, and Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary in Barbados.

I am fully insured.

I have grown up with dogs all my life, and trained many of them, but now I feel more drawn to helping dogs who can’t help themselves.

I work with my clients in a friendly, informal and non judgemental way, so you can relax and just be yourself. My priority is helping you and your dog achieve a greater bond and level of trust, and a deeper understanding of one another.in Oxfordshire,  Acre’s Way rehoming centre in Essex, Many Tears Animal Rescue in Wales, and Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary in Barbados.

My book ‘Be More Dog’ has many useful training tips, as well as some interesting sessions with clients, all interwoven with my own story. It explores the advantages of being more present, and non- judgemental, and sets out just how much we have to learn from our four-legged friends.

My book ’No Such Thing as a Bad Dog’ is a manual for all dog owners. It has advice on choosing the right dog, training, behaviour modification, and maintaining good results. If you have a dog with a problem, this is the book for you.

Both books are available to order from the contact form below, or from www.troubador.co.uk

How it Works

1

initial Meeting

I will get a brief outline of the problem over the phone, and then make a home visit. This allows me to view the normal behaviour of you and your dog, and also allows the dog to see me as accepted into his home. I want your dog to feel comfortable around me.
It is useful to have as many household members as possible present, as the dog may act differently with each one.
I will ask you for a bit of history, and we’ll discuss in greater detail the behaviours you would like to change.
I sometimes feel it necessary to take the dog off on a short walk without the owner present, for a realistic assessment. Dogs often behave very differently when their owners are present.

2

Exercises

We will then practice any relevant exercises, inside and outside the house. I will follow up with a recap of all we talked about, and things to practice. The initial meeting usually takes around 1 ½ hours.

I teach through reward based methods and positive association. (Although bad behaviour does not always go unchecked). I do not agree with the use of punishment or prong collars, electric collars, or choke chains. I will teach you how to get your dog to obey you through using your energy alone. Body language and leadership play a key role in getting your dog to respect you and follow your commands, leading in turn to a closer loving bond.

3

Follow Up

I will send you a follow up email to recap all the things we talked about, and give you a list of exercises to practice with your dog. We can then arrange to meet as often as you would like the support for. Some behaviours can be fixed in one session , others will need many more.

4

Maintenance

I’m available on the phone should you need some fine tuning.

Testimonials

Walking on the lead, jumping up

Thank you, for your thorough, courteous and professional assessment and recommendations. We practised walking on lead this morning, and it was noticeably better simply by the time we got back. And I ‘moved into her space’ this morning when she tried to jump up. She didn’t do that again! Nice! Now I’ve just got to get the kids to do the same, so she gets a consistent message, like you say.

Aggression to other dogs

Thanks Fenella for all your guidance over the last couple of months. I realize its going to take my continued commitment, but the change I have seen in Danny is so positive already, and he’s really listening to my commands now, and choosing to look at me instead of other dogs. Since you taught me about his body language I can now tell which dogs he’s going to go for, and I can divert a fight. Yesterday he said hello politely to every dog we passed! At this rate we might get the muzzle order revoked sooner rather than later.

Excessive barking, carpet licking

So many thanks Fenella for coming to train Flurry (and me and my husband.) You were so warm and responsive, and fun but firm ! You sorted us out so beautifully! We have been trying to be firm but kind in the way you demonstrated, and when we remember what to do it really does work. He is such an obliging dog and has been cooperative in ways I didn’t think he knew how!

Separation Anxiety

Quick update on Angel- even the day after you left I could see an improvement. To be honest I think she could sense a change in my attitude, so she knows she can't get her own way any more! Now I can leave the room for half an hour, and she will happily go to her crate and wait without barking. Thanks Fenella-I can smell freedom!

Fear of loud noises, and going out in dark.

Our 7 yr old dog Charlie (f) developed a fear of fireworks, thunderstorms and onwards from that , any random loud bangs. The result being that she refused to go out in the evening. Within the first session we had with Fenella we learnt to improve our body language to make Charlie follow our commands, and use distraction to give her no time for fear, and make every experience positive. And we learnt how to build up her confidence. I thoroughly enjoyed the practice with Fenella. She is a joy to have on board, and an upbeat lady with practical solutions which suited us very well. The follow up email is very useful too. I’m happy to report that Charlie is improving, so I’m very grateful to Fenella and would definitely recommend her for any behaviour problems . She reads the dog’s body language immediately and hands you the tools to help your dog.

Nervous dog. Fear when going outside.

Thank you so much for your time on Sunday, and all the advice. I’ve attached a video of Kira from yesterday, and you can see we got her out the house easily. We’ve just made some small changes so far but you can see her confidence building already. There was a car back-firing and it barely phased her!

Poor recall, aggression, ball obsession.

My dog was an absolute handful before Fenella did her magic. She quickly understood the temperament of Purdey as well as the anxieties of the owner! She was completely non-judgemental about the relationship I have with Purdey, but also explained her psyche, which helped me not to over-parent! We have had 5 sessions and I now enjoy taking Purdey for a walk rather than dreading the disapproval of my fellow dog owners. Man’s best friend is most definitely a dog – but also a Fenella!
